How to make a living as a dancer ?
It is true that dancing is a beautiful profession, a galvanizing one, which values and rejoices everything that looks at. Yet this profession, which puts so much balm to the heart, can be very difficult and some dancers live in nameless precariousness. They juggle from project to project hoping to reach the Holy Grail which is the status of intermittent. But what is it ? How can you benefit from it as a dancer ? We will tell you everything in this article.
“A path strewn with pitfalls”
Yuri Buenaventura once said “Dancing is like speaking in silence, saying many things without saying a word”. There is no better description of this art that moves our body. Sometimes it is to express joy, sometimes anger, sadness, or whichever emotions. What matters the most is that dancing is important.
It’s so important that some have decided to make it a profession. While this thirst and fire animates a lot of dancers, many do not know that they have chosen a path strewn with pitfalls.
Indeed, being a Krumper is not like being a doctor who works more than 10 hours a day and has a salary at the end of the month. Being a Krumper means living paycheck to paycheck, from show to show with wages that vary according to contracts.
So what’s the solution if you want to make a living ? The answer is Intermittent.
Intermittent, what is it ?
An intermittent is a person who works in the field of art or technique. As stated above, since this field is not fixed, the government has found a way for artists to live decently even when they are unemployed.
This special scheme was created in 1936 to allow intermittent workers to work for a short period of time and to have money even when they don’t have contract. 87 years later, this regime is still valid and the number of intermittent workers is constantly increasing in France.
Certainly the number of intermittents is constantly evolving but it is not so easy to be part of this very closed club. Indeed, many conditions must be met to be able to become intermittent.
A select club
Not everyone can be part of the very select group of intermittency. Indeed, certain conditions are mandatory in order to become intermittent in France , and hold on, the list is very long !
First, you must be under 67 years of age and you must be registered at Pôle emploi(French group to find a job). Secondly, you should never be idle, so you have to be constantly looking for a contract and work.
In addition, you cannot combine the status of intermittent and that of a self-entrepreneur if they are involved in the same activity (Dance).
Finally, the last and not least condition is to have 507 hours of activity in the year otherwise you can not benefit from this famous status.
The list is therefore very long to benefit from the status of intermittent. But, if Krump is a true passion for you, and you want to live off it, you will have to arm yourself with courage to be able to obtain this Holy Grail.
